Boy do I feel better... a day of fishing after a month off! *gasp!*

I went to Elevenmile Canyon today. I feel like such a champ! Just getting out has been a bit of an issue, with the holiday season and whatnot. I did go to Deckers a few days ago, but it was a short outing that found me searching for clean water downstream towards Trumbal. Mostly poking around with a little fishing thrown in. I saw five, fished to three, caught one... 33% success.

Today was better, I got up there early enough to have some real nice sunshine on the river. Following the sun is a good tactic in there in the winter, or at least I have convinced myself that it is. There were just a few midges coming off, slate dun size 22's. Pupae were a little bigger, say a 20. Also low numbers (thank God!) of itty bitty no-see-um midges, like a 38 or something. No fun to match, unless you are asian.

I had good luck with my latest fad, the ten foot four weight with a level taper running line and a level fourteen foot leader. Basically flicking cobwebs. Can be a pain, but the line does not spook fish. Hoorah!

I caught around ten fish, I was not counting. I lost at least twice as many as I brought to net due to my lethargic hookset. Also finned a couple, unfortunately. My bad. I did not fish to the notorious Elevenmile Canyon "boot-lickers" though there was ample opportunity to do so. Fish were caught on a small assortment of midges, all in the 22-26 range and dun or black.

Fish of the day.

spooky light... Middle Earth?

My best bug for the day and the real deal.
No. 22 TMC 2488 with Coq-de-leon tail, Adams
superfine, and a UV sparkle Organza split wing, Ju-Ju style.
Not perfect by any means, but in the ballpark. The fish liked it.

There you have it.

Cheers!

Liberal Guilt

Yes, it is true. I am a Pink-o Commie... uh, let me think, what was the word that comes after Pinko Commie, uh, maggot? Close enough. I feel so bad when I do the wrong thing, the un-sustainable, the greedy neo-impearialist world despoiling H. Sapiens virus plague thing, the made for TV movie about a prodigal son turned crusader for world peace in a vacuum in space, painted like an endangered species. Wait, what the hell does that mean? I have no idea. Never mind...

I drive a car, often for no good reason, when I could walk to my destination with ease. My car only gets twenty or so miles to the gallon, because it is a four wheel drive. Cars are bad. When everyone in China drives a car, it will be a cluster-f***. I eat meat, love it, actually, I eat tons of it. Naturally raised, hormone free, free range, no steroids or antibiotics, locally grown, at farms where the cows and the pigs and the chickens lock arms and sing Bob Dylan songs, then walk cheerfully to their death at the hands of a smiling bearded hippie with an organic cotton smock over his Yonder Mountain String Band tee shirt, but meat nonetheless. I use way too much electricity, and *GASP* I get it right off the grid. Compared to a Bolivian peasant, I use 3,000% more energy on a day to day basis. I am so bourgeois in fact that I spend a large part of my time actively engaged in the pursuit of capturing fish only to release them and capture them again at a later date! At least I recycle...

Actually, I ain't been fishing very much as of late. It has been about a month, and I don't quite know what to think. It feels nice in a way, like I have the upper hand with the "monkey," but it is at the same time un-nerving and strange.

I finished my second semester at school, so far so good. I was glad to see it start, and I was glad to see it end. I got A's despite spending almost no time involved in study. Needles to say I took no classes in differential equations this past semester. Just easy classes that are required for my eventual (entomology? Ictheology?) degree... history, cultural anthropology, lightweight stuff. I have a CAD class and a Machine Shop class in the spring as electives, and I am exited about those. I plan to make a fly reel and a bass guitar.

The holidays do suck, but hey, they are almost dead for the year. I am not in a soul-killing retail job this year, and while I could very much use the scratch, at least I don't have to exist on a steady diet of "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" and "Santa Baby" like in years past.

On a positive note, I think I am getting a little traction on my fly submissions to Rainy's. They liked the Wolverine, GoGo's, Double Shot's, and a little annelid worm with a tungsten bead called a Metalhead. So far so good on that front. If you see any of that junk in the bins at your local fly shop, you are commanded to purchase it.

I joined a band/neo-kabuki theater troupe and am sorta stoked to be playing again. The troupe is called Odam Fei Mud, and the band is the War Ensemble. OFM does live action choreographed martial arts in costume with multi-media projections and of course live music that skews toward micro-tonal metal. What's not to love? I really do enjoy performing, and I have always gravitated towards weird music. I got a new guitar, a 35" scale length Modulus Graphite Quantum 6 string bass with a AAAAA grade flame maple top and Bartolini electronics:

She's a looker. Traded two basses I didn't play much
and an old amp I was not using... I could NEVER have
afforded this thing without some trade bait. As configured,
it would cost $5, 250.00 to purchase new from Modulus.
Yikes!

Everyone likes pictures of food. This is Jake,
he is in the process of performing a cost-benefit analysis.
Yes, I drink wine from a tumbler.
You got a problem with that?

A fetching pair of asiatic monocled cobras,
'cause hey, why not?
I love snakes.

Hey look, a fish!
How'd that git 'n there?

Cheers!
